Overview:
We are looking for a detail-oriented Utility Billing Analyst to analyze commercial electric, gas, and water utility bills and convert billing data into accurate, benchmarked, and reconciled Google Sheets. The primary responsibility is to determine whether the billed amounts are accurate, identify billing anomalies or potential overcharges, and clearly document the findings.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review 24 months of utility bills provided as a PDF.
- Extract billing, meter, usage, rate, and itemized charge information into Google Sheets.
- Reconcile individual billing charges against the total amount billed.
- Perform 100% mathematical verification of each monthly bill.
- Investigate and correct any variances or missing line items.
- Benchmark utility usage and costs across:
– Month-to-month trends
– Year-over-year comparisons
– Seasonal patterns
– Property size and operational usage - Identify potential:
– Overcharges
– Phantom/unexplained fees
– Incorrect rate classifications
– Meter multiplier errors
– Abnormal usage or billing patterns
– Duplicate or incorrect charges - Calculate the correct amount vs. billed amount and determine potential dollars owed.
- Maintain clear audit notes and supporting documentation for every identified discrepancy.
- Conduct final QC to ensure the Google Sheet matches the original utility bills before submission.
Required Skills & Experience:
- Experience analyzing commercial utility bills is required.
- Experience with electric, gas, and/or water billing.
- Strong Google Sheets/Excel skills.
- Experience with financial reconciliation and variance analysis.
- Strong understanding of utility usage, rates, fees, and billing components.
- Ability to identify unusual billing patterns and potential overcharges.
- Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
- Extremely detail-oriented with a zero-error mindset.
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
Preferred:
- Utility auditing or energy auditing experience.
- Experience with utility tariffs and rate schedules.
- Experience with forensic billing or invoice auditing.
- Experience using AI tools for data extraction and analysis.
