Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Structural Steel Estimator & Takeoff Specialist to support our growing steel fabrication and welding business. This role is responsible for reviewing construction plans, performing quantity takeoffs, preparing project estimates, calculating labor requirements, and assisting with material procurement for commercial structural steel and miscellaneous metals projects. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience in structural steel, welding, fabrication, or steel construction environments and is comfortable interpreting technical drawings, steel specifications, and industry terminology.
Key Responsibilities:
Estimating & Takeoffs
- Review architectural, structural, and shop drawings
- Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for structural steel and miscellaneous metals
- Calculate material quantities, fabrication requirements, and installation needs
- Develop project cost estimates including materials, labor, equipment, and subcontractor costs
- Analyze project scopes and identify missing information or discrepancies
- Assist with bid preparation and proposal development
Project Support
- Break down project requirements into actionable work scopes
- Coordinate with suppliers and vendors to obtain pricing and lead times
- Prepare material lists and procurement documentation
- Support parts and material ordering processes
- Maintain organized estimate records and project files
- Track estimate revisions and project updates
Communication & Coordination
- Communicate effectively with clients, vendors, and internal stakeholders
- Participate in project discussions regarding scope, pricing, and technical requirements
- Provide recommendations to improve estimating accuracy and efficiency
- Escalate potential issues and propose solutions proactively
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum 3 years of experience in structural steel, steel fabrication, welding, or steel construction estimating
- Proven experience performing quantity takeoffs and project estimating
- Strong understanding of structural steel and miscellaneous metals
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and blueprints
- Familiarity with steel terminology, fabrication processes, and industry standards
- Strong English verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent attention to detail and analytical skills
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously
Preferred Qualifications:
- Hands-on welding, fabrication, or steel erection experience
- Knowledge of ANSI standards and structural steel specifications
- Experience with commercial construction projects
- Familiarity with estimating software and digital takeoff tools
- Experience coordinating material procurement and vendor communications
- Spanish language skills (not required but considered a plus)
